http://www.sas.org.uk/news/campaigns/barefoot-wine-beach-rescue-project-2014/ DescriptionTV Presenter Kate Humble Joins Forces with Barefoot Wine & SAS to make Britain’s Beaches Barefoot Friendly.
Now in its seventh year, the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project will this summer visit 14 iconic beaches across the UK, including 3 exciting new locations. The collaboration between SAS and Barefoot Wine has become the most recognisable summer beach clean programme in the UK, mobilising over 5,000 passionate volunteers and removing a massive tonnes of marine litter from our beloved coastline since 2008. It has also helped inspire many coastal communities to undertake more regular beach cleans throughout the year.
SAS Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project events are not just beach cleans. They are also a fun social occasion, engaging communities with the issue of marine litter, and new campaigns & activities volunteers can get involved with to turn the tide on trash. They also help connect communities and encourage individuals to forge new friendships. One of the campaign activities we’ll be encouraging volunteers to get behind this year is SAS’s Unidentified Floating Objects initiative. We’ll be keeping an eye out for regular mystery items turning up on our beaches and trying to identify them together, with the hope of ridding our beaches of them forever.
In a year that will see SAS announce ambitious 2020 marine litter reduction targets, raising awareness of the marine litter crisis and encouraging community activism are more important than ever. So whilst we’re looking forward seeing some familiar faces volunteering with us again this summer we’re equally as excited at the prospect of welcoming along many new marine litter activists to the team.
We’re also delighted to announce TV Presenter and environmentalist Kate Humble as our new Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project Ambassador. Kate will join us to co-host six events* this summer.
Our fingers are firmly crossed for another sun-drenched summer, however whatever the weather our friends at Barefoot Wine will be thanking all volunteers with an exclusive Beach Rescue Project T-shirt and a glass of their excellent wine to round off events. More information at www.barefootwine.co.uk
Please find your nearest event below. For more details and to register your interest in volunteering with us please contact the SAS Beach Cleans team at beachcleans@sas.org.uk or 01872 555 953.
 | SAS Big Spring beach clean 25th March 12pmcome and join us on Scarborough South Bay and make a difference. Meet on the beach near to the Spa Complex
DescriptionSAS big spring beachclean Sunday March25th 12pm South bay
.Once again we're tidying up. There was a great turn out for our
February beachclean run to coincide with the Coastival festival. Thanks
to all the folks who braved the sub zero tems to remove a huge amount of
dangerous crap from the beach. If you need an extra reason to come
along We found a young seal last week with fishing line cutting 4cm
into it's neck, luckily we managed, with the help of Lindsey and co from
sealife to rescue it and treat it. This is a classic example of the
dangers caused by marine litter so come along and help out
 | SAS south bay beachcleanAs part of our ongoing pact with Neptune to clean his doorstep we'll be tidying South bay beach on the 11th of February. We have a local artist who's going to make an artwork out of the litter we collect and there will be a free BBQ for participants. Description
Meet 11am on the beach at the Spa end of South Bay Scarborough. The beach clean is 2 hours long and the BBQ will be around 5ish at the Harbourside lodge on Quay St. Tori Gower is the artist in residence for the event, Tori is in the process of opening a gallery on North Marine Rd and does some superb surf art. We all know the importance of beachcleans, not only is the litter horrible to look at it also causes untold havoc to wildlife. Either by ensnaring or being ingested it kills huge numbers of creatures every year.

 | SAS Spring beach cleanThanks to all the folks who came down to south bay on Sunday to clean up the beach

DescriptionAbout 30 folks ( and 1 equally brave dog) braved the late February cold to do a very thorough clean of Scarborough's South bay. As part of a national SAS beach clean Scarborough locals did themselves proud in both their enthusiasm and in their vigour. As those who couldn't make it can still sign the marine litter petition at www.sas.org.uk and even pay your £18 and join up. Apologies to Cayton bay due to the high tide and tidal surge there wasn't time to clean there as well . That one is for next time. Thanks to Yorkshire coast radio, Radio York and Scarborough evening news for adverising the event
